Zele youngster Mendez joins RS01 programme

The Colombian also joins his AutoGP team in sports cars

793b-mendezAndres Mendez, who is running for Zele Racing in the 2015 AutoGP season, will also join the outfit’s Renault RS01 Sport Trophy programme.

“Working with Zele in AutoGP has been great so far. Hence, I am very happy to be given the opportunity to also do their new Renault RS01 programme. The car is great and I can’t wait to get out on the track with it”, Mendez said.

Team boss Michael Zele is delighted that “we will get even more time to work with Andres. He is still young and very talented, and this way he can also learn a lot in sports car racing.”

Mendez, whose father and grandfather were both racing drivers, began kart racing in 2008. Former F1 driver and LeMans winner Allan McNish discovered the teenager, and he was selected to join the Ferrari Driver Academy.

The 22-year-old from Bogotá gained early Formula experience in a Tatuus and also tested Formula Renault 2.0 cars, before joining IndyCar’s third tier, the Star Mazda Championship, in 2012. In his maiden AutoGP season, the Colombian scored points in every race.

To prepare for his RS01 outings, Mendez will do his first track test with Zele on the Slovakiaring next week.
