Schothorst moving to Zele

RS01-W--38Dutchman joins the Austrian outfit for new RS01 Trophy

Zele Racing has added another driver to its Renault RS01 Trophy line-up. Dutchman Bas Schothorst – whose uncle Jeroen and whose nephews Steijn and Pieter have also made racing cockpits their homes – will join the Austrian team.

“Bas disposes of much motorsport experience, but still has a lot of speed in him. I am sure, he will become a valuable asset for our team”, Zele Racing owner Michael Zele said.

Already in 2000, Schothorst finished runner-up in the Formula Ford 1800 Benelux and in 2007, he also earned his first sportscar silverware. In 2008, he won the Dutch BMW 130i Cup and in 2011, he came third in the Eurocup Megane Trophy, followed by second place in 2012. He also did LMP2 test work for TDS Racing that season.

A year later, Bas moved to the Porsche Carrera Cup Germany, before being promoted to Förch Racing’s Porsche Supercup Team last season. At Zele Racing, the 35-year-old will share his Renault challenger with a yet to be determined prestige driver, while Vittorio Ghirelli and Philippe Bourgois run in the team’s second car.

“I’m delighted about the opportunity to join Zele Racing this season. The team has the right people, spirit and experience to make it a success right from the start. The new RS01 is a superb car and racing during the World Series by Renault weekends means welcoming up to 100.000 fans. My sponsors McGregor, Solutions and DHL were enthusiastic immediately after I told them about my new programme, so I can’t wait to get going”, Schothorst is all excited.

The Renault RS01 Trophy will travel the globe alongside the renowned World Series by Renault 3.5 and the series champion will earn himself a drive with a Nissan Nismo works team in the Japanese Super-GT Series 2016. The best prestige driver will receive a LMP2 cockpit at next year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans.

The RS01 Trophy series opens on May 30 in Spa, Belgium, and closes on October 18 in Jerez, Spain.
